Gratefulness from the Writing Life in Every Day Living

It’s a tough road being a writer. To have your voice heard amidst the millions of books published annually is a tall order. And yet, my first novella, Wake Me Up Inside, still continues to sell modestly after the initial surge from my book release a year ago. We live a modest life style, lucky to own an old boat, roof over our heads, car in the drive. I feel honestly blessed, especially to be married to my best friend, Kevin, a wonderfully kind, generous, supportive, empathetic soul. We have one terrific son Justin who is especially gifted and back at McGill University in 4th year. He is kind, compassionate and cares about the state of the world. He is also very insightful.  In fact, JR Matheson has recently agreed to co-author book two in the Paige Maddison Series (aka our son).  And we have many wonderful extended family members that love and support us; my two sisters, nieces & nephews,a couple of brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws,

especially. Also many cousins, aunts, uncles, friends… Through-out the years, after the loss of our parents, we all continue to be very connected. My thoughts on life as an author – it is a privilege and an honour to be able to write a book that captures the reader’s imagination. It gives me pure joy. And thrilling when a reader takes the time to either review it or email me that they loved it. We all contribute to the positive energy in this world by our passions whether it’s an authored book, a song written and performed, a comedian making the world laugh, or on a more personal level by helping a neighbour in their time of need, or volunteering in a homeless shelter. I, for one, will never stop believing in the goodness of humankind and our potential to evolve together as a more conscious community. All for One and One for All.  I cannot wait until the loyal followers of Paige Maddison read book two in the series. It should be released by next Spring. Life is fantastic. Creating a fantasy is the best feeling in the world and if it makes a reader laugh, smile, cry or afraid, I’ve done my job. I hope the Paige Maddison Series has readers looking at their own beliefs and asking the hard questions about life. Happy back to school to all and for those of us who work for a living or are retired, enjoy the great outdoors. Contribute to the positivity in the world and you too will be joyful and peaceful. Best to all. Lee

PHILIP HENRY, WRITER OF IRISH HORROR, REVIEWS WAKE ME UP INSIDE

Lee Bice-Matheson’s debut novel (Wake Me Up Inside) starts out as a coming-of-age story, exploring the themes of transition and discovery as teenager Paige Maddison is uprooted from her urban life to live in her family’s ancestral home in rural Ontario, but before she leaves, she is already experiencing (prophetic?) visions of a little girl.

Paige quickly comes to love O’Brien Manor and helps to heal the rift between her mother and her estranged parents. Romance also blossoms in the form of hunky neighbour, Brad, and suddenly things aren’t looking so bad in the country. That is, until the ghosts of the past catch up with Paige and her family.

Lee Bice-Matheson slowly builds the tension with a cold spot here and a tap on the shoulder there, and as Paige’s dreams get stronger, she is getting weaker as the malevolent spirit feeds on the life energy of her and her grandfather. With Brad’s help, Paige has a mystery to solve and her grandfather’s medical condition gives the ticking clock necessary to ramp up the tension and make her investigation a race against time.

It’s a short novel and very easily read, and I’m sure its YA target audience will find much to identify with. I liked the Evanescence reference (where the book gets its title from), but the rest of the musical references went over my head. I’m only docking it a star because I believe there is more for teenage girls to empathize with here than a guy at the wrong end of his thirties. 4 stars out of 5.

This is the first book in a proposed trilogy. It’ll be interesting to see where it goes from here.

Thank you Philip Henry. Producer of movies, writer of horror. I am in awe.

This review is from: Wake Me Up Inside (Kindle Edition)

An excellent thriller centered around the curious Paige Maddison who is in her teens is certain to keep you interested till the very end. I’ve just finished reading it…was such a delightful read, I could not wait to get into it each day. I loved the author Lee Bice Matheson’s writing as it was engaging and enjoyable, fast paced yet descriptive enough to evoke vivid mental images of all the main characters. The characters are complex and original. I would definately recommend it to all. The further I read into the story, the more I was intrigued to find out how it would all pan out. I would certainly read more of Lee Bice Matheson’s books in future…it’s a must read!!  Thank you kindly, Jay!  Authors need feedback on their work whether positive or negative. I truly appreciate your review.

MICHAEL CRICHTON (Cry-ton), one of the Fathers of Modern Techno-Thrillers, MAY HE RIP

I am often asked who my favourite author is and my knee-jerk reaction is Stephen King. I grew up in the era of Carrie, Cujo, It and many other King books often read late at night, scared out of my mind.  However, in the 1990’s when our son Justin grew up in our home we discovered Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park.  We watched this video (yes at the time it was a video) so many times when he was young, we imitated several of the actors and their famous lines such as, “Shoot her, shoot her, shoot her!”  I was then reminded of reading The Andromeda Strain by Crichton.  It was one scary book about extraterrestrial microorganisms that clotted blood and humans died within two minutes. Little known fact, this was Michael’s worst fear – massive epidemics.  If you are not familiar with Michael Crichton’s career he was a medical doctor – in fact a graduate of Harvard – who chose not to proceed with a medical license in order to continue his career as a writer.  His book Prey about nanotechnology and novel Sphere which begins as a scientific movie that parlays into a psychological thriller examining alien spacecraft discovered on earth and believed to be over 300 years old will keep you up at night if you consider the underlying themes and messages contained within the written words.  The techno-thriller of writers dealing with medical science, science fiction and concentrating on conflict between humans and machines or biotechnology kept the writing world full of possible alternate realities. Michael experimented with astral travel, aura viewing and clairvoyance and came to believe they included real phenomena that scientists too easily dismissed as paranormal. If your curiousity is peaked, a must read is Crichton’s memoir Travels.  Michael you were ahead of your time!  RIP Mr. Michael Crichton. You are missed but know your influence still continues.

ANNOUNCING JOINT AUTHORSHIP

102_10pgI am so very pleased and proud to announce that Justin R. Matheson, our son, will be joint author on book two in the Paige Maddison series.  As the author of Wake Me Up Inside, our son helped to shape the fictional character named Paige. Although he will argue that he had little to do with it, I beg to differ.  Justin is my inspiration for writing these books and I felt the readers would benefit from his awesome penchant for writing. He once wrote a book, yes an entire book, when he was ten years old.  In fact, I’ve often encouraged him to do the final edits and publish it himself.  I cannot tell you how happy I am that mother and son will be publishing book two in the series.  Welcome aboard Justin! Thank you for honouring your mom and joining 0.02 percent authorship in the world.

Book Cover Design

The key to a great book cover design is the graphic designer and their skills.  The author must succinctly communicate the key points included in the body of the text and in order to do this one must have a great working relationship with the other plus the capability of explaining concepts literally so the graphic designer can abstractly imagine them and then produce a literal book cover.  It’s an exchange of ideas and concepts that each professional takes to the next level until one day the book cover is complete and both parties look at it in awe!  To me, as an author, the cover is just as important as the content! Thank you Adam Dagenais of Effigy Design for doing it again for Book Two in the Paige Maddison series.  It looks fantastic!  I am working on completion of book two so the rest of the world can view your artistic talent within this year.  Adam, You’ve Got Talent!
