On Mentoring Course was a Hit! A Creative Way to learn On Writing

On Mentoring is a course I designed for a gifted student who lives in our city. Jenna’s family asked me to work with her as she is a very passionate writer and gifted illustrator. At the age of 12, Jenna wrote and illustrated a story entitled, Iris and the Dragon Pearl. She completed the 7-week mentoring course with me. We discussed: how to write a novel from scenes, to paragraphs, to chapter writing; the writing process; style of writing; how to write dialogue; how to write a plot outline and summary; on being a writer; character development; marketing: and how to submit, find an agent, and how to work with editors, and more. At the end of the course, Jenna exclaimed, “You’re amazing! I give you 10 out of 10 on your teaching ability.” You really made my day, Jenna! I wish you all the best in your writing and illustrating career. You will do amazingly well. I give you 10 out of 10 for being an excellent student and for listening. When you submitted your first story, it was great. When you submitted your last story, it was stupendous. You knew exactly when to infuse humour, when to use the five senses, when to insert anxiety and fear, and when to introduce new paragraphs and proper punctuation of dialogue. A++ I was so honoured to mentor you and hope I’ve helped you along your path to publishing someday. Thank you for being a great student. Here is Jenna photographed with artist and children’s book illustrator, Mary Ann Tully. I was so happy to get them together to discuss their craft on illustrating. Thank you so much Mary Ann for joining us!
